The beater I once knew and loved and other automobile musings
I like classic cars – especially the 1949 Ford because it was the first car I drove all by myself. I had no idea how important this car was to the American economy. When it was introduced in the spring of 1949, the car was considered revolutionary because it broke from previous ideas of design and engineering.

Motivation: Who has it and how you can get some
What the world needs now is motivation — only the right kind of motivation will do, however. I recently attended a day-long seminar listening to speaker after speaker offer their slant — meaning a biased perspective on something that is likely to appeal to a particular group — on what it takes to have a successful life on any front, including any given Sunday.

Recreating a cycle of supply and demand: A time for extraordinary measures
Whether they want to or not, America’s elected officials must begin to think and act with an out-of-the-box mentality to give our economy even a glimmer of potential to regain its solvency. A major challenge these days relates to how public and private entities, upon which the nation’s economy relies, interact with each other.

A new beginning
Before I turned in my press badge a few months ago identifying me as a working journalist in good standing, I read “Super-Charged Retirement” by Mary Lloyd, who advises her readers to “ditch the rocking chair, trash the remote and do what you love.”

Teaching children the art of living
Some people may think home economics is about real-estate financials. Back in the day, however, home economics was about cooking, sewing and housekeeping. I not only learned the basics of food preparation in a “Home Economics” class, I also learned to sew, which I continue to enjoy to this day.

Parents don’t let your kids grow up to be litterbugs
I have become a connoisseur of urban trash littering our community landscapes. During my daily constitutional, I have seen all kinds of stuff including paper, plastic, glass, clothing and shoes.

The proposed card-check law: bane or blessing?
I recently asked several meat-industry chief executives to answer this question: “If you could get the ear of a key powerbroker in Washington with the most influence over your business, what would you ask for?”

AIG execs should get their bonuses — just not right now
Regardless of public sentiment, for the good of the country, the AIG execs should give the money back and ask for it when times get better.

Plausibility + probability=certainty
Worry is paying interest on trouble before it is due. This was one of my dad’s favorite admonishments to me every time I shared my worries with him.

Obama’s fallen soldiers
It is said that the true test of integrity is not what you do when others are watching, but rather what you do when no one is watching

Let’s take a break and watch the game
After everything that went down last year leading up to the election of a new president and the selection of a new national administration, I think we deserve a break from the constant barrage of bad news and dire predictions.

Christmas at Denny’s
Today, Jan. 20, 2009, is inauguration day for the nation’s 44th president. This is a momentous occasion, to be sure, so why is my mind still on Christmas past? I suspect you know that ideas and concepts are not always owed to intellectual vigilance; they also grow out of happenstance and, at times, from unlikely situations.
