The American Meat Science Association (AMSA) is pleased to announce that, Dr. Betsy Booren, American Meat Institute; Karen Shank, Tyson Foods, Inc.; and Dr. Thomas Boileau, Kraft Foods Group, Inc. will be the featured speakers in theAMSA 67th Reciprocal Meat Conference (RMC) Health and Wellness Symposium, on Monday, June 16th. This session will focus on the development of 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which is intended for Americans ages 2 years and over, including those at increased risk of chronic disease, and provide the basis for federal food and nutrition policy and education initiatives. The purpose of these guidelines is encourage Americans to focus on eating a healthful diet—one that focuses on foods and beverages that help achieve and maintain a healthy weight, promote health, and prevent disease.  The 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans is anticipated to be released Fall 2015.

·         Analysis of the current nutrition policy environment and its impact on future Dietary Guidelines for Americans policy – The Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture are amidst developing the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.  In her presentation, Dr. Booren will explain how federal nutritional policy is developed and will be providing an update on recent activities of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.  Booren will set the foundation for the other two speakers as they discuss how this process and federal nutritional policy impacts the meat and poultry industry. 

·         What the anticipated Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee consumption recommendations mean to the meat and poultry industry- The Dietary Guidelines for Americans provide evidence-based nutrition advice for Americans and guide federal nutrition policy.  Meat and poultry are important contributors to the American diet and provide nutrient-rich sources of quality protein. In this presentation Dr. Boileau and Ms. Shank will discuss current dietary recommendations for meat and poultry and the potential directions of future dietary recommendations.
