Former Westland/Hallmark worker pleads no contest on abuse

CHINO, Calif. – A former slaughterhouse worker in California on Friday plead no contest to animal cruelty charges at the Westland/Hallmark plant in Chino, Calif.

Daniel Ugarte Navarro was caught on undercover video abusing sick and injured cows at the plant. Reports said he plead no contest to the two felony abuse charges and to two misdemeanor counts of cruelty to downed animals. He faces up to a year in jail when sentenced in August.

The video of Navarro and another worker abusing cattle lead to the largest beef recall in U.S. history.

The other worker plead guilty in March to three misdemeanor counts of illegal movement of an non-ambulatory animal was sentenced to six months in jail.
