Richard J. Riella of Manteca was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court after pleading guilty to two misdemeanors in January, AP reports. As owner of Riella Farms Inc., the 48-year-old was licensed to slaughter clients' animals for personal consumption. The meat was supposed to be marked "not for sale."
The indictment against Riella said federal food safety investigators working undercover in 2004 made anonymous purchases from customers at an informal market on Riella's property. The investigators said all the meat they purchased would have failed federal inspections.
