Closed locker plant leaves behind 44 tons of rotting meat

Authorities removed 44 tons of rotting meat that was left behind when a Bridgewater, S.D., locker ceased operations 2008. Bridgewater Quality Meats had its power shut off in December, and authorities are alleging that company owner Ilan Parente left the meat in coolers. The meat went unnoticed until locals began noticing a rotting smell two weeks ago.

Initial attempts to get Parente involved were unsuccessful until the city’s attorney got involved, according to The Daily Republic. He then sent two employees to remove the meat, but city authorities got involved when it became clear that progress was not being made.

According to a McCook County official, the company closed early last year after several run-ins with authorities. In 2004, it was sued by the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources for environmental violations.
