Ordinarily, reports of strong sales, or even record high sales, would be a cause for celebration.

After fighting through the clouds that have dimmed the meat- and poultry-processing industry in the last couple of years (not to mention the rest of the U.S. economy), we may have found the silver lining.

THE NATIONAL PROVISIONER is conducting a survey of meat, poultry and prepared foods companies.

The meat-processing industry, as evidenced by the Top 100 Report, continues to be both extremely stable in some aspects and wildly erratic in others. The companies at the top of the list — Tyson Foods, JBS USA, Cargill Meat Solutions and Smithfield Foods — did not break rank from last year.

Processors continue to find ways to grow the industry in volatile times, through acquisitions, expansions and new products.

There has been the sense of optimism about a turnaround for the U.S. economy since the start of the year, and some evidence of that turnaround is starting to show up. For example, the National Restaurant Association Restaurant Performance Index recently topped 100 for the first time in two years.
