FSIS, the CDC, and state public health and agriculture partners, have been working together on an illness cluster involving 164 case-patients in 35 states.
An Arizona-based meat producer recently announced a recall of 6.9 million pounds of various raw, non-intact beef products because of possible contamination with Salmonella Newport — by far the largest beef recall in recent history, and the largest for Salmonella in beef.
The problem was discovered when the CFIA notified FSIS that the Canadian establishment produced the product outside the approved period of work shift agreement.
