Carl Buddig & Company purchases Rupari Food Services

By Industry News
June 16, 2017

Carl Buddig & Company, a family-owned producer of  branded lunchmeats and sausage products, has announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, CBQ LLC, has acquired the assets of Rupari Food Services, South Holland, Ill. Prior to the sale, Rupari Food Services was a leading producer of branded and private label, restaurant-quality barbecued meats, ribs and heat-and-serve offerings.

“Acquiring the assets of Rupari makes good business sense for Buddig as we expand our portfolio of fresh, great-tasting, affordable meats. It gives us immediate access to an attractive pre-cooked BBQ segment and allows us to strategically grow our nationwide footprint,” said Bob Buddig, CEO of Carl Buddig and Company. “We are excited to welcome a team of more than 200 experienced and dedicated employees to the existing Buddig family of employees.”

Buddig will leverage its national sales and distribution network to continue servicing supermarkets, club stores, food service and military channels. For a limited period of time, Buddig will continue production and sales of Tony Roma’s branded Ribs and BBQ entrees to ensure continuity of supply and meet retailer and consumer demand. The company will also continue offering its Butcher's Prime brand and developing customized solutions for its food service customers.

“Buddig prides itself on outstanding customer relationships that stand the test of time,” said Bob Buddig. We recognize the bankruptcy process created challenges for Rupari’s customers, vendors, and employees. Our top priority will be to stabilize the operation, restore confidence, and begin the process of establishing successful long term relationships with our new business partners and employees. This approach has served Buddig well for nearly 75 years and we believe it will be the cornerstone for our success in the future.”

Production will continue the South Holland facility formerly occupied by Rupari. Buddig worked extensively with Rupari to ensure an easy transition between their employees and the new operations through the closing of the sale. The transition included a new collective bargaining agreement between CBQ, LLC and United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, Local 1546.

The purchase of Rupari will bring Carl Buddig’s Illinois-based workforce to more than 1500 employees. The company has a rich history in the state of Illinois and is always looking to continue to expand offerings and opportunities in the state. Carl Buddig & Company is the family-owned parent company of Buddig lunchmeat and Old Wisconsin hardwood-smoked sausage and snack products. Based in Homewood, Illinois, Carl Buddig & Company has been feeding family traditions for 75 years with the very best in taste, variety and convenience.

Carl Buddig completed the asset acquisition on 6-14-17.
