A week after announcing that it was closing three processing plants and laying off 650 workers, Beef Products Inc. is cutting an additional 86 jobs. The job cuts are directly attributable to the backlash the company has received as a result of food activists protesting its lean finely textured beef, which they characterized as “pink slime,” the company said in a statement.

The latest job cuts include corporate staff in South Dakota and reductions at the company’s machine shop and assembly facility in South Sioux City, Neb. The company announced earlier this month that it is shutting plants in Amarillo, Texas; Garden City, Kan., and Waterloo, Iowa, with job cuts effective May 25.
