40-year-old seafood company explains why it left Microsoft Exchange for IceWarp

August 14, 2013

Global messaging solution provider IceWarp has announced that one of its longtime clients Pacific American Fish Company (PAFCO) has explained in depth why it switched from Microsoft Exchange to IceWarp and has been happy with IceWarp for the past four years. Many of the issues discussed are common for medium sized businesses every day but often come to be accepted as the status quo.

Pacific American Fish Company (PAFCO) was established almost four decades ago and has been family run for two generations. It is currently one of the most successful seafood companies in California with over 300 employees and highly trained associates. PAFCO has direct access to its fishing vessels, fish farms, and processing plants around the world, allowing it to directly oversee all of brands and all phases of production.

Four years ago PAFCO was running Microsoft Exchange to handle its email. Exchange had always been time consuming to run, but when spam email began to gradually increase Director of Technology Rick Corl began to research if there was a better alternative.

“Exchange was stagnant at the time,” recounts Corl. “We needed a product that we could grow into. Our main focus was on speed, flexibility and ease of use.”

Corl evaluated several different email server solutions, included hosted options. One of them was Google Docs, which after installing Corl felt had similar limitations to his current Exchange system.

“With Google you have to buy X amount of space per user which really limits us,” explains Corl. “We also looked at ePrism spam prevention but it wasn’t good at the time.”

After some research PAFCO discovered IceWarp.

“Management and flexibility were once again our big deciding factors when trialing different products. With IceWarp I can adjust mailbox sizes on the fly and exceed Google’s space limitations.”

Corl then downloaded IceWarp, ran it for several weeks and was impressed. He ultimately decided to completely replace Exchange with IceWarp’s mail server.

“Everything is tied into one central point, making it easy to manage.” says Corl. “The antivirus and antispam add to the ease of use. I don’t have to manage multiple appliances or software servers. The actual spam portion of Exchange isn’t as good as IceWarp’s.”

PAFCO has 250 email users. After implementing IceWarp it reports that daily spam was cut down to 2% of its former level.

“Some of our users were getting 100+ spam messages a day," says Corl. “Now they’re getting one or two. We have 250 users and get about 15,000 emails a day just to put our traffic into perspective. Today if I look at the analytics we’ve had 7,000 spam messages stopped and 5,000 messages refused because they basically want to hack into the network.”

Rick also liked the high degree of control IceWarp gave PAFCO.

“One of the features I really like is that we can quarantine messages. So let’s say we have some confidential emails. I can quarantine those messages to make sure they stay internal.”

For the future PAFCO is looking at expanding into IceWarp’s other messaging capabilities.

“One of the components we’re going to add is instant messaging,” says Corl. “We tested it and are looking to deploy it in the future. We’re possibly adding the VoIP as well. IceWarp is a product we can always grow into.”
