Since 2004, McLaughlin managed international sales for UltraSource LLC, a provider of such packaging equipment as modified atmosphere tray sealers and vacuum chamber machines. McLaughlin also worked as a project manager for Tomahawk Construction and as International Application Engineer, Export Sales, for SPX Cooling Technologies. 

Fluent in Spanish, McLaughlin taught the language for two years at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he also received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He earned a Master of Business Administration from Baker University, Overland Park, Kan.
