Neogen launches easy quantitative tests for T-2/HT-2 and ochratoxin

January 9, 2013

Neogen has developed new tests for ochratoxin and T-2/HT-2 toxins that combine the speed and simplicity of lateral flow tests with the quantitative precision of more demanding testing methods.

Neogen’s new Reveal® Q+ for T-2/HT-2 Toxins delivers precise results ranging from 50 to 600 parts per billion (ppb) of the toxins after only a water extraction and 6 minutes. New Reveal Q+ for Ochratoxin provides precise results ranging from 2 to 20 ppb in 9 minutes. Reveal Q+ test strips are read in Neogen’s AccuScan® lateral flow test reader to deliver quantitative results.

“Reveal Q+ tests for T-2/HT-2 toxins and ochratoxin complete our line of fully quantitative mycotoxin lateral flow tests that includes tests for aflatoxin, DON, fumonisin, and zearalenone,” said Ed Bradley, Neogen’s vice president for Food Safety. “The new Reveal Q+ products add to Neogen’s unmatched range of simple and accurate lateral flow, microwell, immunoaffi nity column mycotoxin testing options — all of which are backed by the best technical and R&D support in the industry.”

Neogen’s AccuScan Pro reader provides an easy method to objectively read, store, and analyze results from Neogen’s line of lateral flow tests. AccuScan provides a permanent result that can be incorporated into a company’s food safety plan, such as HACCP. The new tests offer room temperature incubation of the test strip and storage of the test kit — eliminating the need for an incubator and refrigeration space. T-2/HT-2 toxins are trichothecene mycotoxins produced by several species of Fusarium molds. Since T-2 toxin is readily metabolized to HT-2 toxin, and the toxins have been shown to produce numerous adverse effects on many animals, these two mycotoxins are frequently evaluated together.

Ochratoxin, commonly produced by the molds Aspergillus ochraceus and Penicillium viridicatum, can be found in corn, barley, green coffee and various dried fruits. Ochratoxin may be present in conjunction with aflatoxin, one of the most potent naturally-occurring carcinogens. In fact, ochratoxin is a suspected carcinogen.

Neogen Corporation develops and markets products dedicated to food and animal safety. The company’s Food Safety Division markets dehydrated culture media, and diagnostic test kits to detect foodborne bacteria, natural toxins, genetic modifi cations, food allergens, drug residues, plant diseases and sanitation concerns. Neogen’s Animal Safety Division markets a complete line of diagnostics, veterinary instruments, veterinary pharmaceuticals, nutritional supplements, disinfectants and rodenticides.
