Michael Angelo’s debuts new line of Italian flatbread

Three new flatbread flavors are available at Walmart

May 22, 2013

Gourmet Foods announced the launch of a new line of Italian flatbread, representing the first foray into meal occasions other than center-of-the-plate entrees by the

company known for authentic prepared Italian meals. The line features four flatbread varieties, including Pepperoni & Salami Flatbread, Mediterranean Flatbread, Sausage & Mushroom Flatbread and Margherita Flatbread. The first three offerings are currently available at Walmart stores across the nation, with additional availability to follow.

“Our new flatbreads were developed in response to our customers’ interest in foods that can bridge many different occasions,” said founder and CEO Michael Angelo Renna, who started the company over 30 years ago from his mother’s pizzeria in San Diego. “Fewer people are eating three square meals a day, and in response, we have adapted our line of Italian foods to give options that fit a snacking lifestyle. These flatbreads are ideal for a light lunch, after-school snack, party tray or meal starter.”

Every ingredient is selected by Angelo Renna and his mother, Sara, who is still involved in the family-owned and -operated company. Everything Michael Angelo’s makes is also free of the common preservatives, artificial flavors, additives and stabilizers found in most prepared and frozen foods. Instead, Michael Angelo’s depends on the layered flavor that comes naturally with vine-ripened tomatoes, authentic Italian cheeses, fresh vegetables and herbs.

“I grew up cooking with my grandma Foti – a wonderful woman from Sicily – and she taught me the importance of appreciating both the cooking and the eating of good Italian food,” said Sara, the mom behind Michael Angelo’s and the cook behind many of the company’s best-selling meals. “We spent a lot of time in the kitchen working on these flatbreads, making sure they each maintained the Michael Angelo’s dedication to quality and flavor, while also offering something new and different to our customers. I’m proud of what we came up with – Grandma Foti would be proud, too.”

The Pepperoni & Salami Flatbread includes pepperoni, salami, authentic mozzarella and imported Italian Romano cheese on a spicy arrabbiata tomato sauce. The Mediterranean Flatbread is a vegetarian option featuring artichokes, roasted corn, roasted red peppers, authentic mozzarella and imported Italian Romano cheese on a delicate cream sauce. The Sausage & Mushroom Flatbread is a classic, topped with sliced Italian sausage, mushrooms, caramelized onions, authentic mozzarella and imported Italian Romano cheese on a vine-ripened traditional tomato sauce. The Margherita Flatbread is an Italian favorite, with slices of fresh mozzarella cheese, basil and imported Italian Romano cheese on a spicy arrabbiata sauce.
