TOMRA, National Frozen Foods donate $4,000 to Massey Memorial

National Frozen Foods, a frozen food processing company with facilities in Oregon and Washington, has received a charity voucher worth $4,000 after winning The Golden Bean competition, held by TOMRA Sorting Food, a leading provider of sensor-based food sorting machines.

The competition was held to celebrate the launch of the new TOMRA 5B, a state-of-the-art sorter for the vegetable, fresh cut and potato processing industries.

The TOMRA 5B processed 20 kg of green beans, one of them made of gold, and the person who came closest to correctly guessing the moment when the golden bean would be ejected was awarded with the voucher. The prize was presented to Kevin Massey at the National Frozen Foods plant in Quincy in December.

Kevin, who entered the competition on behalf of National Frozen Foods, decided to donate his charity voucher to the Massey Memorial, a community celebrating loved ones with Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The Massey Memorial was established by Kevin in honor of his late brother, Keith.

Kevin said: “ALS is a debilitating disease for which there is no cure and witnessing Keith’s battle is something I will never forget. When Keith succumbed to the disease, I lost a younger brother, a fishing partner and a friend.”

“TOMRA’s contribution to my brother’s memorial fund will help provide the money necessary to fund research for a cure, so hopefully someday we will live in a world without ALS. The entire Massey family is grateful for this donation.”

Karel Strubbe, Sales Director AMERICAS, TOMRA Sorting Food, said: “We are very pleased that National Frozen Foods chose the Massey Memorial as their good cause and that we were able to help Kevin reach their family goal of $5,000.”

The TOMRA 5B is the first of a next generation of innovative sorting machines. Karel added: “Recent developments in our technology result in more accurate decisions about the quality of the product. These technological advancements not only improve the quantity of food available, but they also maintain the high levels of quality expected by consumers who are increasingly interested in what they are purchasing.”

“The TOMRA 5B boasts a powerful combination of exceptional features, state-of-the-art innovation and ease of use. It is a great addition to the TOMRA range, guaranteeing excellent results throughout the entire sorting process.”
