June 6, 2019

The American Meat Science Association (AMSA) is pleased to announce, Dr. Jennie Hodgen, Dr. Kaitlyn Compart, and Kendra Waldbusser will be the featured speakers at the AMSA 72nd Reciprocal Meat Conference (RMC) Symposium entitled “Industry Update on Bacterial Resistance” on Wednesday, June 26 in Loveland, Colo. This session will be sponsored by JBS USA Food Company and its affiliate Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation. The AMSA 2019 RMC is co-hosted by Colorado State University and JBS USA Food Company.

The featured presentations include:

Industry Overview of Antibiotic Resistance in Beef and Pork: Responsible use and antimicrobial stewardship has been a focus in the livestock industry. Come listen to Dr. Jennie Hodgen, Senior Account Manager of Corporate and Diversified Accounts Team for Merck Animal Health explain some of the industry, academic and government research, findings, and tools that are allowing a better understanding and ability to monitor antimicrobial resistance in livestock species. Also discover how this background information is shaping the One Health conversation.

Bacterial Resistance in Further Processing: Bacterial resistance continues to be pressing topic for the livestock industry from the live animal to the finished ham. Dr. Kaitlyn Compart, Senior Science Manager for Smithfield Foods, will discuss the traditional hurdles used in further processed meats and if they continue to provide sufficient protection to potentially resistant bacteria.

Bacterial Resistance in Fresh and Further Processed Poultry: USDA reports that nearly 50% of the broilers in the U.S. are being raised without the use of any antibiotics. Kendra Waldbusser, Head of Food Safety and Quality Assurance for Pilgrim’s will be discussing bacterial resistance (antibiotic, antimicrobial, sanitizer, etc.) that the broiler industry has observed through both company and USDA surveillance over the years. She will also be discussing trends in both customer requests for antibiotic claims and consumer inquiries regarding how their food is raised.

The AMSA 72nd RMC will be held June 23-26, 2019 at the Embassy Suites in Loveland, Colo. For more information regarding the AMSA 72nd RMC please visit: http://www.meatscience.org/rmc or contact Deidrea Mabry 1-800-517-AMSA ext. 12.
