LAUREL, Miss. – Sanderson Farms has kicked off a summer program to promote nutritious eating and more activity for families.

Called “Kick ‘em off the Couch for Summer,” the program is encouraging families to spend time together and to take advantage of local attractions. The company said it is recommending that families visit local visitors’ bureaus for affordable attractions without driving cross country.

Sanderson Farms is also promoting recipes it has developed to encourage healthy eating for the summer. Steve Bonasia, Sanderson Farms’ executive chef, has developed recipes that include sticky fingers barbeque pizza and chicken sloppy joe sandwiches to chicken fried rice and cheesy chicken quesadilla dippers.

The company said that studies have shown that children spend more time watching television than any other activity. Sanderson Farms is challenging families to take advantage of Backyard Bargains, budget-friendly activities within their own areas and create make-at-home alternatives to favorite meals.
