Smithfield Foods is closing its Altoona, Iowa, facility and consolidating production volume at other locations to improve the efficiency of its manufacturing platform.
Production from the acquired facility will support Smithfield's existing portfolio of dry-sausage brands, adding dry-sausage production capacity of 50 million pounds per year.
The donation, including bacon, sausage, smoked sausage, ham steaks, hot dogs and various sandwich meats, provides over 150,000 servings of protein to individuals at risk of hunger in Geary County, Kan.
