Seaboard Foods has been recognized by National Underwriter Property & Casualty with the 2016 Excellence in Workers’ Compensation Risk Management award for forward-moving achievements in workers safety, safety team development and making safety a priority throughout the connected food system, resulting in lower workers compensation claims. Seaboard Foods received the award on Aug. 22, at the general session of the 71st Annual Workers’ Compensation Educational Conference in Orlando, Fla.

The Excellence in Workers Compensation Risk Management award is given to companies with successful loss-control, safety and return-to-work- programs and notable abilities to manage workers’ compensation.

Seaboard Foods has made significant strides in workers’ compensation and employee safety programs. The company reduced the total number of workers compensation claims by nearly 50 percent and workers’ compensation costs by 70 percent. In the past year, Seaboard Foods’ total recordable incident rate, DART (days away, restricted or transferred) rate and lost time incident rate — three important metrics in the safety industry — are approximately half that of industry peers throughout all operations, measuring against reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“We took a holistic approach to employee safety and workers compensation. The first step was developing a system of meaningful data, which allowed leadership to prioritize opportunities and take action. We implemented a comprehensive program for injury and claim management from triage care to maximum improvement,” said Kay Stinson, vice president of human resources and animal care. “Our approach to diagnose workers early with specialized medical treatment and doctors right at the time of injury, instead of general practitioners, helped us return our team members back to work and their personal lives in the most effective way possible.”

The commitment of the leadership team and efforts by management and team members to create a safe work environment resulted in a third of the injuries from ever occurring, which was a critical piece to earning the Excellence in Workers’ Compensation Risk Management award.
