AMSA 72nd RMC Innovation at the Cellular Level – Cell-Based Protein speakers announced

By Industry News
March 20, 2019

The American Meat Science Association (AMSA) has announced that Dr. Paul Mozdziak, Dr. Kate Krueger, and Brian Spears will be the featured speakers at the AMSA 72nd Reciprocal Meat Conference (RMC) Symposium entitled “Innovation at the Cellular Level – Cell-Based Protein,” on Monday, June 24 in Loveland, CO sponsored by Cargill. The AMSA 2019 RMC is co-hosted by Colorado State University and JBS USA Food Company.

The featured presentations include:

  • An Overview of Animal Cell Culture Technology applied to Food Production: Animal cell culture is a classical and core laboratory technique that arguably dates to the late 1800's. Currently, animal cell culture is employed as a biomanufacturing platform to produce a wide-range of therapeutics used in human medicine, such as influenza vaccine. Presently, there is an increasing amount of interest in applying modifications of biomanufacturing strategies currently used to produce therapeutics to the production of food products. In this presentation, Dr. Paul Mozdziak, Professor at North Carolina State University, will focus on describing the current strategies and limitations for producing animal-based food products using biomanufacturing techniques.
  • Cellular Agriculture: A New Frontier: Cellular Agriculture is the use of cell cultures for food production. Dr. Kate Krueger, Research Director at New Harvest, will discuss the different types of cellular agriculture, exploring early successes, and ongoing challenges. She will examine the importance of cellular agriculture research to support the field’s continued development.
  • Rapid Development of Cell-Cultured Meat - Muscle, Fat & Connective Tissue: Cultured meat describes meat that has been grown in cultivators outside of an animal's body. In this presentation Brian Spears, co-founder and CEO of New Age Meats, will describe how they do this at New Age Meats, and how their approach of automation and data science speeds up the research, development, and production of cell-cultured meat.

The AMSA 72nd RMC will be held June 23-26, 2019 at the Embassy Suites in Loveland, CO. For more information regarding the AMSA 72nd RMC please visit: http://www.meatscience.org/rmc or contact Deidrea Mabry 1-800-517-AMSA ext. 12.

FPSA to work with American Meat Science Association in support of mutual goals

The Food Processing Suppliers Association (FPSA) announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the American Meat Science Association (AMSA), confirming plans to work together to further each other's goals in 2019. As part of this agreement, FPSA will participate as a sponsor at AMSA's Reciprocal Meat Conference taking place June 23-26, 2019 in Fort Collins, CO. Additionally, FPSA will be recognizing the top three winners of the RMC student ePoster exhibits who will be invited to present their work at this year's PROCESS EXPO taking place October 8-11, 2019 at Chicago's McCormick Place.

"We are very excited to be working with AMSA in support of their efforts to further food science in the meat industry and continue to develop the next generation of food industry professionals," said Jarrod McCarroll, Chairman of the Food Processing Suppliers Association (FPSA) and President of Weber, Inc. "We are proud to contribute to the Reciprocal Meat Conference and look forward to the many students and faculty that will be able to join us at PROCESS EXPO. Given our live production line demonstrations of ground beef patties and summer sausage, the extensive educational program, the Quad student program and our online job board, in addition to the presence of the meat industry's leading suppliers among our exhibitors, PROCESS EXPO 2019 truly is a must attend event for students looking to go into the food industry."

"As part of this agreement, we will be providing complimentary registration to PROCESS EXPO 2019 for any AMSA members and providing AMSA with a booth to promote their organization to the PROCESS EXPO audience," said David Seckman, President & CEO of the Food Processing Suppliers Association (FPSA). "We feel that this is an excellent fit for both organizations and look forward to developing the relationship further in future years."

For more information on attending the show, or to register for PROCESS EXPO, please visit www.myprocessexpo.com. For more information regarding exhibiting at PROCESS EXPO 2019 contact Brent Ausink at brent@fpsa.org or (757) 268-2021.
