BRAWLEY, Calif. – Brandt Beef said Wednesday that Las Palmas Resort and Spa Executive Chef Leanne Kamekona won the 2008 California Date Chef Competition for her dish featuring Brandt Beef filet mignon.

Brandt Beef said in a statement that Kamekona was awarded first place in entrées and the People’s Choice Award for her New Mexico red chile and date crusted Brandt Beef filet mignon. Three panels of judges tasted a selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts, which were evaluated by criteria including: best use of dates, originality, flavor and overall presentation. The People’s Choice Award was chosen by the event’s 500 guests.

The company said that fifteen professional chefs competed in the eighth annual event, which was sponsored by the California Date Administrative Committee, representing Coachella Valley's date growers and handlers.

The 2008 competition was held at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. on Sunday, April 27.
