The Beef Industry Long Range Plan task force recently unveiled its new five-year plan for 2026-30, with the aim of the Long Range Plan being to ensure the US beef industry provides sustainable, high-quality beef that meets consumer demands worldwide.
The effort identifies six key areas of focus:
- Policy and supply chain viability — The US beef industry has a viable supply chain with the freedom to operate.
- Sustainable industry outcomes — The US beef industry produces environmentally sound, economically viable and socially acceptable products.
- Public engagement and building confidence — The public trusts and demands high-quality, safe and nutrient-dense US beef.
- Innovation, science, research and continuous improvement — The US beef industry continues to innovate and improve, making the industry resilient, credibleand successful in the long term.
- Stakeholder engagement — US beef industry stakeholders align on production systems across segments to meet common consumer demands.
- Animal health and food safety — US cattle and the beef supply are healthy and safe.
"The six goals are tightly interwoven," said Joe Lowe, Beef Industry Long Range Plan task force member and Kentucky rancher. "For example, strong policy advocacy can enable the research funding and innovation needed to improve sustainability, which then builds public trust. Similarly, goals focused on stakeholder collaboration and animal health ensure the industry speaks with one voice and can respond swiftly to emerging challenges like disease outbreaks or shifting consumer preferences."
Lowe shared some insights regarding priorities and goals for the Beef Industry Long Range plan:
What is the Beef Industry Long Range Plan, and how does the effort aim to help the beef industry?
Joe Lowe: Since 1995, every five years a Task Force has been appointed by the Officer Teams of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, Federation of State Beef Councils and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association to study and compile major areas of opportunity and challenge facing the beef industry for the next five years. The resulting Long Range Plan is a tool designed to help the beef industry establish a common set of objectives and priorities. It communicates the industry’s strategic direction and provides insight into how the industry can serve its stakeholders by growing beef demand.
What are some unique challenges for the US beef industry for ensuring sustainable, high-quality beef that meets consumer demands worldwide?
Joe Lowe: Industry challenges include labor shortages and generational transition; the need for strong advocacy within policy and regulatory arenas to preserve market access and operational freedom; economic challenges including inflation and supply chain vulnerabilities; and how fragmentation hinders the industry’s ability to present a united front on critical issues.
How will successful implementation of the Long Range Plan benefit meat processors and other downstream stakeholders in the beef value chain?
Joe Lowe: Thirty years ago, consumer sentiment was being overlooked, but today it is front and center for our industry. Credit has to begin with this original plan, specifically acknowledging the loss of market share beef was having to pork and poultry. Our group was challenged to remind the industry that through constant and consistent focus on the consumer, we have turned around the negative trend. We do not want to take our eye off the consumer as they are the source of new revenue to our industry, which allows us to grow and thrive. A maintained focus on consumer satisfaction paired with efficiency and sustainability gains on the production side will allow us to continue to offer a superior product downstream while improving the climate for profitability across all sectors.
