Butterball to release low-sodium deli products at IDDBA

News Brief Feature

May 16, 2011
As a committed participant in the National Sodium Reduction Initiative (NSRI) – a nationwide effort to cut the salt in packaged and restaurant foods by 25 percent by 2014 – Butterball LLC is launching its lower sodium deli products at the International Deli Dairy Bakery Association’s (IDDBA) annual conference. With an average sodium reduction of 10 percent, Butterball’s Original Deli items will provide consumers with better-for-you options while maintaining the delicious taste they love.

Sodium will be reduced in 18 deli products across Butterball’s Original line, which will be on shelf beginning in June 2011. Lower sodium varieties include: Golden Oven Roasted Turkey Breast, Honey Roasted & Smoked Turkey Breast, Country Deli Chicken Breast, Italian Style Turkey Breast, Deep Fried Thanksgiving Turkey Breast, Black Pepper Turkey Breast and more. In addition to being recognized as a prominent partner of the NSRI, Butterball also offers 17 deli items, including its Carolina Turkey product line, that are certified by the American Heart Association (AHA) as meeting its criteria for saturated fat and cholesterol.

“Today’s average American consumes about 50 percent more than the recommended amount of sodium for adults, and more than half of consumers report they watch their salt intake on a regular basis,” said Kari Lindell, director retail marketing for Butterball. “While the majority of Butterball’s products already fall within the NSRI 2014 guidelines, Butterball has made it a priority to make further sodium reductions in its deli meats while retaining the delicious taste our consumers love.”

Attendees at the 2011 IDDBA Conference June 5-7 will have a chance to taste Butterball’s lower sodium deli products during sampling events at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Sunday and Monday as well as 11 a.m. Tuesday where Butterball’s Master Chef Tony Seta, C.M.C., will prepare a variety of recipes featuring the following Butterball products: Naturally Roasted Gold, Original Lemon Pepper, Original Golden Oven Roasted, Original Smoked, Original Deep Fried Buffalo Chicken, Just Perfect Thanksgiving and Just Perfect Honey Maple. Samples will be available at booth #1433.
