True Jerky debuts South African Biltong in its ethical meaty portfolio

By Industry News
October 3, 2018

Made by True, purveyors of healthy, ethical and damn delicious meaty snacks, announced today a new name, new brand and the arrival of a new product: Biltong. Biltong is a traditional South African style of air-dried beef that is naturally higher in protein, more tender and sugar-free. Despite a meaty history in South Africa, Biltong is just making its U.S. debut, and True is excited to introduce it to American carnivores. To celebrate the True transformation, the brand is kicking off a social campaign to #CarneDiem and sink your teeth into life’s everyday-est adventures.

With 80 calories, 16 grams of protein and zero sugar per ounce, Made by True Biltong is the perfect meat for health-conscious snackers who subscribe to keto, gluten-free, soy-free, paleo and Whole30 dietary philosophies. It is also the perfect snack for anyone who enjoys lusciously soft, tantalizingly tender texture, and 50% more protein than conventional jerky. Adapting a 300-year-old recipe with five traditional ingredients (beef, vinegar, salt, pepper and coriander), Made by True Biltong is available in three adventurous flavors: Cape Town Classic (Salt, Pepper and Coriander), A Savory Adventure (Garlic, Herb and Spices) and Little Bit of Spice (Coriander, Chili Powder and Paprika). With this new line, True continues to maintain its commitment to sourcing only 100% U.S. raised beef, a unique practice within the meat snacks space, owing to co-founder & Beef Executive Officer Jess Thomas’ third-generation ranching heritage.

“Our passion for food, culture and travel took us on a 10,000 mile journey through South Africa, where we came to learn about biltong’s significance and history from local ranchers, meatpackers, manufactures, retailers and consumers,” said Thomas. “Biltong is an integral part of South African food culture and we found so much national pride and love for the product that was truly contagious. It gave our team a passion for the product, and we’re ecstatic to share the most authentic version possible of this killer snack with meat lovers and snackers nationwide.”

With the launch, True adds to its impressive portfolio of creatively crafted meat snacks, including its award-winning beef and turkey jerky in six globally inspired flavors, and its ‘Trail Re-Mix’ line, which pairs tender strips of beef, bacon and turkey jerky with delicious fruit and nut medleys.

Currently, Made by True has distribution in over 2,500 locations, including Sprouts Farmers Market, Safeway-Albertsons, Cost Plus World Market and Peet’s Coffee. Biltong is currently available on the company’s website, Amazon and coming soon to retailers nationwide.
