Red•Dot Stainless Steel While-In-Use Box, Cover System protects electrical devices in harsh environments

The Red•Dot Stainless Steel While-In-Use Box and Cover System, new from Thomas & Betts (T&B), protects electrical devices in harsh environments, including those that are susceptible to liquid ingress and corrosion.

The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires that electrical wiring devices used in wet locations be protected, even when the cord is plugged into the receptacle. Requirements for outlet box covers have become stricter in recent years in response to demands for durability, especially in high-traffic areas.

Given increasingly stringent requirements imposed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), the need for liquid ingress protection and corrosion resistance in electrical devices is particularly acute in the food and beverage processing industry.

“The needs that the food and beverage industry faces in protecting its electrical power equipment are unique in manufacturing,” Ralph Donati, product marketing director at T&B, said. “In addition to the requirements it must meet from both food processing and electrical power regulations, it must deal with sanitation and wash-down procedures, concerns about pathogens and 24/7 manufacturing schedules. To meet the challenges of protecting electrical devices in harsh and demanding environments found in the food and beverage processing, and other, industries, we developed the Red•Dot Stainless Steel While-In-Use Box and Cover System.”

The Red•Dot Stainless Steel While-In-Use Box and Cover System is a solution that complies with NEC and UL requirements for “extra-duty” outlet box covers installed in locations that require wash-down maintenance. The product also is NSF certified.

The Red•Dot Stainless Steel While-In-Use Box and Cover System is made of 316 stainless steel, which is more corrosion resistant than other types of stainless steel. The system’s smooth, sloped surfaces allow maximum runoff and eliminate water collection points. It is configurable to a variety of sizes and types of outlets.
