Unlocking margin, consistency and efficiency in seafood with linerless labeling

Moving to linerless labeling is a strategic move that not only aligns with the growing use of vacuum skin packaging but also provides a labeling solution that molds seamlessly to the pack for a clean finish without lifting, creasing or compromising print quality.

Volatility has become the norm in today’s seafood category. From fluctuating raw material costs to ongoing pressure on retail pricing, maintaining both margin and market share is increasingly challenging. Against this backdrop, retailers and brand owners are looking closely at every part of the value chain for efficiencies, and labeling choices can make a huge difference.

Reducing risk and boosting productivity

Moving to linerless labeling is a strategic move that not only aligns with the growing use of vacuum skin packaging (VSP), which enhances product visibility and extends shelf life, but also provides a labeling solution that molds seamlessly to the pack for a clean finish without lifting, creasing or compromising print quality.

In seafood, labelling is not just about branding, it is also fundamental to compliance. Issues such as label detachment in wet or chilled conditions, smudging or misalignment can result in rejected shipments or, more seriously, incorrect product information reaching consumers.

Linerless technology helps mitigate these risks. Suitable for temperature-controlled and high-moisture environments, linerless materials deliver durable, high-definition print that remains stable under stress. Fully adhered labels also reduce the risk of tampering or product-label separation, which can occur with sleeves during transit or in-store handling.

For retailers and brands, this adds an extra layer of protection against mislabeling incidents, which can potentially result in serious issues, such as allergen risk.

The operational benefits of linerless labelling are also substantial. By eliminating the silicone-coated backing paper, linerless labels remove an entire waste stream, and more labels per roll means fewer roll changes, less downtime, and reduced storage requirements too. Production lines can run longer and more efficiently, while transport costs are lowered due to increased roll density.

The gains can be dramatic. In one case, a Catapult Print customer doubled throughput from 45 packs per minute to 90 packs per minute after switching from manual sleeves to linerless label, enabling them to make significant labor cost savings by eliminating an entire shift. In the UK, some lines are running at 140 packs.

Sustainability gains without trade-offs

Sustainability remains high on the agenda for both retailers and consumers, and linerless labelling offers clear advantages without compromising performance.

Eliminating liner waste significantly reduces the volume of material sent to landfill, while fewer roll changes and higher label density translate into lower transport emissions. Combined with reduced storage space and simplified handling, these benefits contribute to a smaller overall environmental footprint.

Importantly, these sustainability gains come alongside operational and financial improvements, rather than at the expense of operational gains.

As seafood retailers and brand owners look for ways to protect margins while maintaining quality and competitive pricing, packaging standardization is becoming an increasingly important lever.

By aligning co-packers around a single, efficient labelling format, businesses can create a more agile, consistent and cost-effective supply chain from catch to counter. When combined with a print partner that can offer reliability, shorter lead times and real-time data, the benefits extend even further.

In a category defined by complexity, perishability and tight margins, linerless labelling stands out as a practical, scalable solution. For retailers and brands ready to unlock greater efficiency, reduce risk and drive long-term value, the case for mandating linerless has never been stronger.
